Vassel G. Johnson Jr. (Bud Johnson) was born and raised in South Sound, Grand Cayman, and attended Cayman Prep School and Cayman Islands High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stephen’s Institute of Technology in the U.S. in 1982.
Bud began his career at the Bank of Nova Scotia, where he developed his analytical and financial management skills in both the banking and trust divisions from 1982 to 1986. He then transitioned to Atlantis Submarines, starting as a co-pilot and quickly advancing to General Manager by 1993.
Throughout his 34-year tenure, Bud demonstrated exceptional leadership, strategic planning, and operational management, overseeing all aspects of the business, including human resources, marketing, and stakeholder relations. His ability to navigate complex challenges and drive organizational success has equipped him with the skills necessary for effective governance.
Married to Sheila in 1987, Bud has three sons: Godfrey, Julian, and Maxwell. He has been an active member of South Sound United Church and served on the Board of Governors for Cayman Prep and High School for over 15 years, including five years as Chairman. His commitment to education and stakeholder engagement has sharpened his skills in collaboration and communication.
With a deep commitment to family, faith, and community, Bud is dedicated to the long-term success of the Cayman Islands. His diverse experiences have fueled his desire to enter politics, where he aims to leverage his leadership and problem-solving skills to advocate for policies that address the pressing issues facing our community and ensure a prosperous future for the islands.
